Using Play in Your Training

Incorporating play into dog training is not just a ‘nice-to-have’, it’s a must-have. It makes learning more enjoyable for your dog, strengthens your bond, and contributes to their overall well-being. Remember, the goal is to create a positive and enriching environment for your dog to learn and grow.

Why Include Play?

1. Enhances Learning: Dogs, much like humans, learn better when they’re having fun. Playful training sessions boost their eagerness to participate and make the learning process more enjoyable.

2. Builds a Strong Bond: Play strengthens the bond between you and your dog. This enhanced relationship translates to better communication and understanding during training.

3. Reduces Stress: Both for you and your dog! It’s easy to get frustrated during some training sessions, but incorporating play helps to keep things light and relaxed.

4. Improves Mental and Physical Health: Play is a great way to keep your dog mentally stimulated and physically active, which is crucial for their overall well-being.

How to Incorporate Play into Training

1. Use Toys as Rewards: Instead of always using treats, occasionally reward your dog with their favorite toy. This not only reinforces good behavior but also integrates play.

2. Play-Based Training Games: Games like nosework (finding hidden items), fetch, and tug-of-war naturally incorporate multiple behaviors like ‘sit’, ‘stay,’ ‘recalls’ and ‘drop it’ into fun activities.

3. Short and Sweet Sessions: Keep training sessions short and playful. This prevents your dog (and you) from getting bored or overwhelmed.

4. Rotate Activities: Just like humans, dogs can get bored with repetition. Mixing up training activities keeps your dog engaged and excited to learn.

5. End with Playtime: Conclude each training session with a short playtime. Some evidence suggests that play after training can help dogs better retain what they’ve learned.
